Greece is on high weather alert because extreme weather has caused fires and is expected to bring storms, The Ministry of Civil Protection stated that there is a very high risk of fire in the regions of Chania in Crete, Laconia in the Peloponnese and the island of Kythira.
“The risk assessment committee, in an emergency meeting this morning, informed us of dangerous weather phenomena with strong storms and intense electrical activity tomorrow in many parts of the country,” Minister Vassilis Kikilias said in a statement on Wednesday, noting that a meeting of the coordination body for Civil Protection was imminent, to achieve a maximum degree of readiness of the state apparatus
The National Meteorological Service announced that unstable air masses coming to Greece from the northwestern Balkans will bring heavy rains and thunderstorms, especially to the central and northern areas of the country.
Some information has been coming from forecasts, the biggest problems will occur on Thursday morning in Halkidiki, northern Greece, and the neighboring areas, while from noon until late at night the phenomena will extend to Fthiotida, Fokida, and Viotia in central Greece, to Attica, as well as the regions of Korinthia and Argolis in the Peloponnese.
